Reviews

How reviews work.

Reviews on Sable come from people who booked a stay through Sable, and every one of them is published, good or bad. This page says who is asked, how the score is worked out, what a business can and can't do, and how to report a review.

Who can review

Only the person who booked a stay through Sable, after the stay has ended. Stays cut short count. Nobody else can leave a review: not the business, not its staff, not their families, and not anyone who didn't stay. Reviews are never bought, swapped or rewarded, by Sable or by any business on it.

When you're asked

About two days after your pet goes home, Sable emails you once to ask. If you haven't had a chance, it sends one reminder a week later, and that's the last email about it. You can write a review until 30 days after the stay, from the link in the email or from the booking in your Sable account. You can stop review emails from any of them.

Every finished stay is asked, automatically. A business can't choose who is asked, switch the invites off or change the wording.

What a review is

One overall score from 1 to 10, which is required. Two optional boxes: what you liked and what could be better, up to 600 characters each. Six optional category scores: care and attention, cleanliness, updates and communication, facilities, value for money, and drop-off and collection. The category scores never change the overall score.

A review shows your first name and your pet's name, the month of the stay and how many nights, and whether you had stayed there before. You can choose to show your first name only. Nothing else about you is shown.

How the score is worked out

A business's score is the plain average of every published overall score from the last 3 years, shown to one decimal place and rounded down, so 8.96 shows as 8.9. It appears once a business has 3 reviews; before that the page says "New on Sable" and shows the reviews themselves, including the count. Removed reviews and reviews being checked are left out, and the score updates straight away when one is removed.

9+Superb
8+Very good
7+Good
6+Fair
<6Poor

Reviews are shown newest first, with the option to sort by highest or lowest score. There are no featured or hand-picked reviews, and nothing a business pays affects where its reviews or its listing appear. Scores do not change the order businesses appear in search; if that ever changes, businesses are told in writing at least 15 days first.

What a business can do

Reply once, publicly, to each review. That's all. A business can't edit, hide or remove a review, choose who is asked, pause the invites, or offer anything in return for a review or for changing one. Sable can remove a reply that breaks these rules, for example one that gives away personal details.

Editing and withdrawing

You can change your review while the 30-day window is open, and withdraw it at any time. An edited review says "Edited". If you delete your Sable account, your review stays with your name replaced by "A Sable customer", unless you withdraw it first.

Reporting a review, and when one is removed

Every review has a Report link. Anyone can use it: pet owners, businesses and people who just see it. The reasons are: not a genuine stay, personal information, abuse or threats, advertising or off-topic, the wrong business, untrue and damaging, or blackmail.

A reported review stays up while Sable checks it, unless it is plainly abusive, in which case it is marked "Being checked" and left out of the score until a decision is made. Sable aims to decide within five working days and records who decided, why and when. Reviews are removed whole or not at all; they are never edited, and they are never removed for being negative or because the business disagrees with the score. If a review is untrue and damaging, Sable follows the UK rules for such notices: the complaint is passed to the reviewer, who has five days to respond.

A business caught faking reviews or rewarding them gets a warning, then a notice on its page, then loses its reviews.

Review or complaint?

Both, if you like. If something went wrong and you'd like it put right, contact the business as well. Your review is still published; nobody will ask you to complain instead of reviewing.

Kuruba and Sable

Sable is built and tested at Kuruba Kennels & Cattery, where Sable's founder works. Because of that connection, Kuruba's reviews follow exactly the rules on this page with one extra check: nobody who runs or works at Kuruba, or their family, can review it, and any decision to remove a Kuruba review is checked by someone outside both businesses.

Your data

A review is personal data. Sable publishes it on the business's Sable page for 3 years because that is what reviews are for, under its legitimate interests, and you can object, edit or withdraw at any time. The full details are in the privacy policy. Review emails come from Sable, carry an unsubscribe link, and never contain offers or anything else.
